Dear Internet Visitor, Welcome to the web site for Monterey High School, the continuation high school for students in the Burbank Unified School District. Our school is designed to meet the needs of sixteen to eighteen year old students who have, for a variety of reasons, been unsuccessful in the traditional comprehensive high school setting. Continuation schools within our state are intended as the first line of defense for drop-out recovery and students are usually transferred to our school voluntarily. Monterey was established as a separate school site in September 1983. During the past fifteen years there have been many changes. The most dramatic change came when students were allowed to enroll in a full six period day of coursework. The positive results of this change can be seen in the much larger number of students who complete the district requirements for graduation. The coursework at Monterey is individualized to meet student needs. Class size is smaller to provide time for personalized instruction. In order to be successful, students must assume a great deal of responsibility for their education, but they will receive substantive support from all the staff members at Monterey. Monterey High School has received much recognition for the work it does with students. This school year, the California Continuation Education Association awarded Monterey's partnership "Exemplary Program" status. In 1997, the California Department of Education recognized Monterey as a Model Continuation High School. Monterey High School is a fully accredited high school with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. We welcome you to browse our web site and learn more about our unique school. Sincerely, Mrs. Ann Brooks, Principal |
