Dear Internet Visitor,

David Starr Jordan Middle School is uniquely situated between an expanding center of television and entertainment industries on one side and a burgeoning immigrant population on the other. Jordan Middle School, which was named a California Distinguished School in 1994 and 1999, serves 1,035 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Currently, the student body is 53% white, 38% Latino, 3% Asian, 3% Filipino and 3% African American. Jordan welcomes and embraces the broad cultural, economic and ethnic diversity of our students as an artist would welcome a palette with many colors, hues and textures.

Jordan provides a high-quality educational program for all students as we build the foundation needed to be successful in high school and the years beyond. All students are enrolled in a challenging academic program, which consists of English, social science, math, science, physical education and an elective. A variety of special programs, including Gifted and Talented and special education classes, are offered in addition to the regular school program.

The school, which is over 50 years old, consists of five classroom buildings, an auditorium, library, gym and locker room. Funded by the City of Burbank, a two year modernization project was completed in 1999. The project included improved lighting, new windows, acoustic ceilings, tackable walls, media walls with sliding white board and storage, tile floors, air-conditioning/heating and paint. The campus also includes lower and upper grass athletic fields, an asphalt-topped play area and landscaped areas between the classroom buildings.

Parent support is strong as evidenced by the number of parents who joined the PTA (Parent Teacher Association). Parental input is sought and valued as they are active members of the School Site Council and the Safety Committee. The counseling department sponsors parent education evenings to support parents as they work with their teenagers. Volunteers come in twice a week to work with students in the Warner Bros. Time to Read program. Disney volunteers mentor individual students.

We invite you to visit Jordan, the home of the Cougars, to observe our students and staff at work in a friendly environment with high academic standards.
