Kelly Ohrt Teacher of The Year |
My name is Kelly Ohrt and I have been a teacher for ten years. I have taught both 2nd and 3rd grades at Providencia Elementary School. I am a bilingual teacher and work with Spanish speaking students both in their primary language and in English. I enjoy watching student's faces light up with understanding as they begin to comprehend and work in English. Being a bilingual teacher has really been a fulfilling experience; it has been an ongoing rewarding profession. I have explored many different areas of study with my students. Some of my favorite themes have included: Butterflies, Indians, Life Cycles and Diego Riveras Art Murals. I have recently begun to incorporate drama with my Language Arts classes. Over the past two years, I have worked with fellow teachers to develop thematic units around different Literature books. The presentations have included the two musicals: Stone Soup - A Rock Opera and The Little Red Hen. The students participate in narrations, singing and acting. The entire school attends our performances, as well as many of our parents. They were both great successes, and the students learned a great deal from their experiences. Suffice it to say, I really enjoy teaching and helping my students learn through a variety of techniques and modalities. Every learner I have encountered has his/her own personal preference for learning a concept. I see it as my responsibility to provide many different opportunities for my students to learn and enjoy learning! |
