Burbank High School Awards & Merits

Dorris Lang
Teacher of the Year
Burbank High School
Teacher of the Year 1998

Dorris Lang has been a teacher at Burbank High School since 1965. She was among the first group of mentors in the District and has served eight years in that capacity. In addition, she has served as a master teacher for CSUN, sponsor of the award-winning literary magazine-Potpourri, and advisor of clubs as diverse as Z Club, the International Club, and the California Scholarship Federation.

She has been the recipient of the PTA Honorary Service Award and last year was the California League of High School's Region 8 Nominee for Educator of the Year for her curriculum and interdisciplinary team teaching.

She has served her staff as Faculty Chair, representing them at the ceremony when BHS became a Distinguished High School. Additionally, she has functioned as English Department Chair, BHS Site Council Representative, and Advanced Placement English teacher.

Her focus has always been on her students; encouraging them to read, coaching them in the "Writing as a Process;" instructing them in using higher level thinking skills; and asking them to "stretch." Currently, she is working with the ninth grade teachers at BHS in a coordinated effort to increase the success of the freshman class. When asked why she has been so happy teaching all of these years, she said, "I am following my bliss."
