Disney School is a warm, welcoming place of learning. The campus is bustling with activity even on weekends. Staff, parents, and children work together to maintain Disney as the center of quality learning. We never lack for ideas or energy to move forward, to strive for, and to achieve higher and higher levels of quality. We have earned several recognitions due to the vision of building a quality school and the collaborative working of the entire school community: 1) Designation as a model technology school by Technology for Results in Education and the Burbank Unified School District; 2) UCLA Extension training school for technology credentialing; 3) Recipient of a 1510 grant for technology in 1994; 4) California Distinguished School Regional Nominee in 1995; and 5) California Distinguished School, May 1997. Walt Disney Elementary is a K-5 school located in a suburban community north of Los Angeles in the city of Burbank. The neighborhood community consists of business districts on Victory Boulevard and Olive Avenue. Olive Recreational Park and Center and Joslyn Retirement Center are directly across the street. The neighborhood is mostly single family homes with several apartment complexes interspersed among the homes. The neighborhood has the flavor and fabric of a well-established Hispanic/Anglo community so typical of many small California cities. Walt Disney School has a total enrollment of 419 students, with 73.5% or 308 of these students classified as minorities. Within the total student population, 11 different languages are represented. The largest group of language minority students (60.4%) is Hispanic, with all other language minority students representing 4.5%. Approximately half of the students who enroll at Disney Elementary School speak a language other than English as their first language, and most of the students who enter kindergarten are classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP). Parents, staff and students highly value: 1) Student achievement of curriculum standards in language arts (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and mathematics, and the application of these skills to integrated curricular projects; 2) Competency in technology skills and applying these skills to daily work and learning; 3) Cultural diversity and the opportunity for students to develop understanding and respect for each other; 4) Taking pride in the school and its appearance, making it a clean and safe place to be for children; and 5) Teamwork and a sharing of expertise enriching the overall learning environment and meeting challenges of today’s changing society. We encourage students to take pride in their accomplishments. Families are especially dedicated to the school environment, and many volunteers helped to paint the entire outside of school through donated materials. Traditions have made Disney School the heart and hub of the community. Many are of such scope and value that they take the form of major community events. Among the most popular events are the Disney Carnival, Holiday Program, Spring Dance, and Multicultural evening. School goals evolve out of a common unified vision of developing a "quality school" where all students and teachers take pride in quality work. Disney School goals for 1997-98 are: 1) All students will experience a curriculum that is coherent, relevant, and significant; 2) All students will demonstrate competency in curricular areas through the use of multiple assessments; 3) All students will engage in a comprehensive, relevant, community supported program of intercurricular activities that will promote cultural appreciation, wellness, and self-esteem leading to cooperative working relationships; 4) All students will become competent in using technology as a tool to enhance curriculum projects; and 5) All parents will participate in curricular learning activities supporting their children’s academic progress.
