VISION STATEMENT AND GOALS The entire school community at Thomas A. Edison
Elementary School is highly committed and motivated to providing all students with a
nurturing, creative, and safe learning environment where a well-balanced, structured and
meaning-centered instructional program will empower all students to develop the academic
and social skills to be inspirational leaders in an ever-changing society.
Thomas A. Edison Elementary School is a forward thinking school with enthusiastic students, dedicated staff, a strong academic curriculum, high standards, and strong community involvement. It is one of eleven elementary schools in the city of Burbank, a community of nearly 100,000 residents, and is located in the northeast end of the San Fernando Valley. The school was built in 1940 and has a long standing tradition of stability and excellence in education. The Edison community is a closely knit unit where staff and families work together for the benefit of the students and the school. Edison is a prized place to work and the teachers and staff are highly qualified professionals who meet the challenge of providing a full and rich coverage of the core curriculum. There are 26 classroom teachers and various specialists including a full-time music teacher, a Curriculum Specialist, a Literacy Resource Teacher, and an ELD Specialist who provide a varied educational program including an exemplary music program, a comprehensive literacy program, an outstanding technology curriculum, and a model English language development program. The special education specialists provide exceptional services through the Student Success Team process. Collaborative review of student outcomes allow teachers to make modifications to curriculum and instruction for the benefit of all student. The Burbank Unified School District has a strong commitment to staff development. The District provides five staff development days a year which focus on diagnosing student needs, designing common criteria for determining achievement on District wide standards, and using the latest in educational research to effectively provide and deliver a comprehensive core curriculum. This comprehensive process ensures Edison School's tradition of excellence in education. The Edison student population is very stable with a current enrollment of 557 students, K-5. The average daily attendance has been increasing over the past three years and is now 95.94%. The total student enrollment increases each year and that trend is projected to continue. The student population is composed of 18% Limited English Proficient students, with ten different languages represented. Four percent of the students are currently enrolled in the Resource Specialist Program, 5% receive speech services, 1.1% receive adapted physical education services, 19.56 % participate in the free or reduced price lunch program, and 10.45% of the families receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children assistance. Full inclusion is being implemented for three special needs students. The Gifted and Talented Education program provides a differentiated curriculum for identified fourth and fifth grade students. Edison School parents and community provide exemplary services to ensure the very best learning environment. During the 1998-99 school year, classroom volunteers and PTA members logged over 8,000 hours of volunteer time. Volunteers give time to assist the students in the classrooms, the computer lab, the library, and with special projects both during and after school. PTA members participate in fund raising which provides fine arts assemblies and annual field trips that are integrated with the school curriculum. The PTA provides student / parent / staff activities such as the family picnic, carnival, holiday food drive, and parent education nights during the year. The PTA sponsors the "Charger Club," recognizing students on a monthly basis for positive citizenship and leadership by featuring them in The Edison Globe, the school newspaper. "Chargers Organized for Outstanding Learning," The COOL Foundation, is another active parent group at Edison. They support Edison by providing additional resources to enhance the instructional program and environment. They raise a minimum of $30,000 annually. They have purchased library books, educational videos, listening centers, a duplicator, computer equipment, and have funded the installation of air conditioning for the library and three classrooms. The School Site Council and the Leadership Team take the lead in planning, implementing, and evaluating the Edison Strategic Plan. The Council has been instrumental in making positive decisions for change and allocating resources to benefit the school program. They have provided direction in developing and revising the school's vision and goals as well as assisting in the planning and implementation of class size reduction. The Burbank civic and business community are truly partners in education at Edison. They provide many contributions such as our adoption by the Disney Studios on "Net Day," the painting of the exterior of our school by the Burbank Board of Realtors, and the City Of Burbank Speakers' Bureau who sends employees to the school to speak on specific careers. |

ATTENDANCE, TARDIES and GRADES |
||
ATTENDANCE- is
important. Student absences must be reported by parents or guardians in written form, in
person, or by phone call. Unexcused absences will lead to consequences like detention,
Saturday Schools, lowered grades, etc. Only students with excused absences will be allowed
to make up work.In order to comply with state attendance regulations, and, more
importantly, to ensure the best education for each child, we request parents send their
child/children to school regularly and on time. When a child has been absent because of
illness or other reasons, we require parents to send a note explaining the reason for the
child's absence or tardiness. Please include on the note:

| HOMEWORK:Thomas A. Edison Elementary School teachers follow the district
policy for elementary school homework assignments. Work assigned for homework will be that
which can be completed at home with little or no adult assistance. We hope that parents
will encourage their child/children to complete the homework, check it over, and help see
that it is returned to school on time. If there are questions about the homework, parents
should contact the teacher. Homework is assigned most weeks on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday. If a specific assignment has not been given or if a child has already
completed the homework assignment, time should be spent with recreational reading.
It is the policy of the Burbank Unified School District (6022) to assign required homework to pupils on a regular basis in the elementary school:
