WHAT MAKES RALPH EMERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SPECIAL?

Emerson offers a developmentally appropriate program in Grades K-2.

Literacy is a priority. We have a teacher on staff trained in a variety of reading interventions, including Reading Recovery.

Our state of the art library features a fully automated card catalog with two student accessible computer terminals. Research is enhanced by our CD ROM Encyclopedia.

Computer literacy is addressed in our computer lab where Kindergarten through fifth graders come to work on reinforcing skills in all curricular areas. The Macintosh stations serve as a multi-media writing/publishing center.

Every classroom has state of the art support equipment including cable television, VCR, laser disc player and CD/tape audio cassette players.

We have established "Teacher Experts" in Grades 4 and 5 to provide excellent instruction, in Math, Social Science and Science.

Providing a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment...

  • We believe children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.
  • We know children want to learn and will learn in a nurturing environment.
  • We accept children where they are academically and developmentally and provide experiences and curriculum that will allow them to work at a success level, yet be challenged to grow in their learning.
  • We recognize the advantages of active parent involvement and encourage parent participation.
  • We seek community support and have active Partnerships dedicated to improving our learning environment.

Our program:

  • produces readers by Grade 3
  • prepares students in basic skills
  • develops critical thinking skills
  • uses technology to support curriculum
  • enhances individuals' self esteem
  • makes the home/school connection to maximize learning

Use the playground gates when entering and leaving school. No one is permitted on the yard before 8:15.

  1. Walk bicycles to and from the lower playground to the rack.
  2. Ask the yard duty teacher or noon supervisor for permission before going to the office or getting a playground ball from out in the street.
  3. Pupils are expected to be in a play area unless physically disabled.
  4. Only school games are played and school equipment used on the playground. Purses, toys, radios and similar items should be left in rooms or at home. Chinese jump rope is not permitted. Balls from home are not permitted.
  5. Pupils remain on the blacktop and the apparatus area unless playing in an approved school group game on the grass field.
  6. Play outside the yellow lines next to the building.
  7. Stop play and freeze when the bell rings. Walk to the classroom when the whistle is blown. Equipment should be held to and from classroom.
  8. Use the restrooms and get drinks before the bell signals everyone to return to the classroom.
  9. Always walk in the corridors and when moving between the playgrounds and the classrooms. Do not hurry or push on the stairs.
  10. Report any injury to the yard duty immediately.
  11. Stay away from any dog that comes onto the playground.
  12. Never leave school during the day without having permission.
  13. Duty teachers, during hot weather, will permit pupils to remain in shaded areas.
