Welcome to the John Muir Middle School Website

John Muir, a California Distinguished School, is the largest of the District's three middle schools. Our mission is to create and maintain a school climate that is safe, nurturing, and academically focused.

Our goals are:
1.  Designing and implementing instructional programs to ensure that all students master the State of California Academic standards and Burbank Unified School District expectancies for each subject area at each grade level.
2.  Promoting the use of a variety of instructional strategies to enable students of all ability levels to experience academic success.
3.  Utilizing technology as a part of instruction in all subject areas.
4.  Conducting a variety of activities that promote mutual respect and civility.

We are preparing our students for the 21st century and are committed to providing an academically rigorous program for all students. Our theme this year is "Personal Responsibility". We believe in providing the support necessary to make all students successful while helping them to become independent learners.

In addition to an outstanding academic program, John Muir has award winning drama, vocal music, and instrumental music programs. Other elective programs include a variety of food classes, a fully equipped technology lab, and 4 computer labs.

John Muir Middle School provides an atmosphere that encourages student achievement and success.

History of John Muir Middle School

Known as John Muir Middle School today, the school first came into being in 1922 when a separate school for the 7th and 8th grades was organized and called John Muir Intermediate School. John Muir started out with less than two hundred students and six teachers. The John Muir Parent Teachers Association was formed in 1923 and has been an active, integral part of the school ever since. The 9th grade was added to John Muir Intermediate School in 1925 and the name of the school was changed to Burbank Junior High School.

At this time there were 670 students and about 25 teachers. In 1929 the name of the school was changed once again, to John Muir Junior High. The school's original location was at 220 East Grinnell Drive. In 1952, its current buildings were completed and the school was moved to 1111 Kenneth Road.

From 1922 up until the present time, John Muir has had 11 principals. The first principal was Elliot B. Thomas who served for 8 years. Allan H. Burnside served the longest amount of time, 19 years, from 1962 to 1981. Under the tenure of William Kuzma, John Muir once again experienced change, sending the 9th grade to the high school and receiving the 6th grade from the elementary schools, becoming John Muir Middle School. Bruce Osgood was selected to be principal in 1999 and is currently serving as principal.

Today, John Muir Middle School is a place where students experience success and healthy self-esteem in a positive atmosphere of learning where all relationships are approached with mutual respect. John Muir is the largest of Burbank's three middle schools with an enrollment of 1440 students. Selected as a California Distinguished School in 1988, 1994 and 1998, Muir Middle School has successfully implemented many fine programs which combine to create an outstanding overall education program. John Muir enjoys a high attendance rate of 94.7 actual attendance. Additionally, John Muir has an excellent support staff of 3.4 counselors.

The SAT-9 is administered to all 6th-8th grade students. From the results of the SAT-9, the State of California assigns an Academic Performance Index (API) score to each school. In 1999, our API was 669. We were expected by the state to raise our score 6 points. Our staff and students worked hard and our score on the 2000 test rose 43 points! Our teachers have focused on teaching the State of California Standards, and our students have responded with increased scores.
