| At Jordan, we work hard to ensure that all students and their families are aware of policies and rules that govern us. The SUMMER MAILING provides families with detailed descriptions of laws and policies. Our opening DISCIPLINE ASSEMBLY highlights important rules and policies and provides students with examples of problematic behaviors and what to do in specific situations. This year, our DISCIPLINE ASSEMBLY was followed by individual CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS of policies. During those discussions, students received a one-page summary of regulations and signed a roster, acknowledging that they had been present for the discipline discussion. We want to share with you some of the basic policies that govern students while they are at school, on the way to or from school, and while at school events. |

| ATTENDANCE - is important. Student absences must be reported by parents or guardians in written form, in person, or by phone call. Unexcused absences will lead to consequences like detention and Saturday Schools. Only students with excused absences will be allowed to make up work. TARDIES - Teachers may assign appropriate consequences for tardies (clean-up, detention, etc.) Tardies will affect the "citizenship" grade. Repeated tardies can lead to parent conferences and more serious consequences through the office. GRADES - are given every five weeks. If a student has an excused absence, he or she should approach the teacher upon return to ask for any make-up work. The make-up work should be done within the same number of school days as the absence. Tutoring before and after school is available. Ask in the counseling office. Remember that the five-week report cards are your warning of possible low grades. Please call teachers, if you have questions about a grade. |

| Consistent with the Board of Education Dress Code Policy, Jordan believes that every pupil has the right to attend a school that is orderly and free from influences that detract from the educational environment. Students at Jordan Middle School are expected to dress appropriately for school. Girls' tops that expose the midriff, have spaghetti straps, or are low cut are not permitted. Also, short skirts, short shorts, and cut-off shorts with frayed hems are not allowed. Pants for all students must fit in the waist, with legs that do not touch the ground and are not split at the hem, or frayed. Shirts may not hang below the crotch. Baggy shorts with socks pulled up to the shorts are not allowed. Students may not wear hats of any kind, except as they are appropriate for a sport at Jordan in which the student is involved. No student may wear clothing that promotes alcohol or tobacco use, or is sexually suggestive. Students who violate the Dress Code will be brought to the office and a call made to their home to receive a change of clothing. Further details of the Dress Code are available upon request. |

| Because every student has the right to learn, and every teacher has the right to teach, Jordan School has a school-wide discipline plan that is enforced fairly and consistently. Due process is followed, and all school rules are consistent with District and State policy and law. Each teacher has classroom guidelines which help your student comply with the specific requirements for assignment and classroom management procedures. 1. ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY- The Board of Education will not tolerate any action of violence, possession of a weapon on school campus, or possession or sale of drugs or drug paraphernalia. Expulsion may result after automatic suspension for violating this policy. Firearms, knives, explosives, other dangerous objects, or even toys or replicas that look like dangerous objects (including squirt guns) will lead to a 5-day suspension and possibly to expulsion. Transfer to another school may result from incidents of this nature. Suspensions may also follow possession of electronic signaling devices (like beepers) or possession of tobacco products. The Burbank Police Department will be involved in these incidents, when appropriate, and arrests will be made for Penal Code violations. 2. SEXUAL HARASSMENT- No one should be made to feel uncomfortable by language, gestures, sounds or actions that are sexual in nature. Neither students nor adults should engage in any behaviors that make a student or staff member feel uncomfortable. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and unwanted verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature are not allowed. Reference to someone's body, unwanted touching, jokes, offensive pictures or drawings, blocking motions, offensive names or any other things that create a hostile or offensive educational environment should be reported to an administrator or counselor. Serious consequences, including suspension or expulsion, may result from incidents of this nature. Transfer to another school may also result. 3. TITLE IX AND 504 - There is equal opportunity for both sexes in all educational programs and activities for employees and students. All programs of the Burbank Unified School District are offered without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, handicap or language skills. We are all part of the JORDAN FAMILY. Together, we can support our students so that they may achieve the best possible outcomes over the three years that they are here. Thanks for all of your concern and support. | |
