Y2K Residential Checklist

This checklist is provided to you by the City of Burbank to assist you in preparing for the problems that may occur as a result of the Year 2000 "millennium bug". The City is working hard to ensure that our community will be prepared to handle the Y2K bug.

What is the Y2K Bug?

On December 31, 1999, equipment and computer devices with date sensitive chips or software may fail as the date rolls over to the year 2000. The problem, known as the Y2K or the Millennium Bug, arises from the fact that many computer systems and embedded chips reflect years with only two digits instead of four. They may fail to correctly handle dates beyond 1999.

The impacts of Y2K are expected to be far reaching. Areas that will most likely be affected include government, utilities, business, industry, telecommunications, transportation, banking, and health care.

Y2K Preparedness Tips

As far as individuals are concerned, preparing for Y2K should be much like preparing for a major storm or an earthquake.

  • Plan to help friends, neighbors, and your community, as necessary. Obtain CPR and first aid training. You may want to consider becoming a Community Disaster Volunteer. For more information, please call 238-3491.
  • Maintain a minimum of three to seven days of supplies such as food, water, first aid kit, flashlights, and spare batteries, warm clothing prior to December 1999.
  • In case you have to use alternative cooking sources, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t use open flames or charcoal grills indoors.
  • As in preparing for any other disaster, maintain a supply of cash in the event that electronic transactions such as ATM and credit cards can’t be processed. Remember to keep the cash in a safe place.
  • Copy and carry health insurance cards and prescriptions
  • Make arrangements with your physician to obtain an extra month’s supply of prescription medications.
  • If you plan to use a portable generator, do not connect the generator directly to your home’s breaker box. Please consult an electrician for more information. Keep the generator outside where it is ventilated. Consider alternative power sources if you depend on electricity for life support systems.
  • Verify that any essential computer controlled electronic equipment such as your thermostat and/or security & fire alarm system and/or sprinkler system is Y2K compliant. Most personal electronic devices such as PCs, VCRs, clocks, and answering machines can be manually reset.
  • Maintain at least a half tank of fuel in your vehicle.
  • Persons with travel plans during the year 2000 should confirm reservations and plans prior to departure.
  • Check with your bank or credit union to determine their Y2K contingency plans.
  • Maintain detailed, current records of financial transactions, such as 1999 bank and credit card statements; pay stubs; income tax records and Social Security statements.
  • All bills and payments that contain interest payments or penalties based on late charges should be inspected and detailed records kept.
  • Check with your broker/financial planner regarding risks to your investments.
  • Maintain awareness of your employer’s Y2K compliance status.
